  The TPS65983 is a stand-alone USB Type-C andPower Delivery (PD) controller providing cable plugand orientation detection at the USB Type-Cconnector. Upon cable detection, the TPS65983communicates on the CC wire using the USB PDprotocol. When cable detection and USB PDnegotiation are complete, the TPS65983 enables the appropriate power path and configures alternatemode settings for internal and (optional) externalmultiplexers.

  The mixed-signal front end on the CC pins advertises default (500 mA), 1.5 A or 3 A for Type-C power sources,detects a plug event and determines the USB Type-C cable orientation, and autonomously negotiates USB PDcontracts by adhering to the specified bi-phase marked coding (BMC) and physical layer (PHY) protocol.

  The port power switch provides up to 3 A downstream at 5 V for legacy and Type-C USB power. An additionalbidirectional switch path provides USB PD power up to 3 A at a maximum of 20 V as either a source (host), sink(device), or source-sink.

  The TPS65983 is also an Upstream-Facing Port (UFP), Downstream-Facing Port (DFP), or Dual-Role Port fordata. The port data multiplexer passes data to or from the top or bottom D+/D– signal pair at the port for USB 2.0HS and has a USB 2.0 Low Speed Endpoint. Additionally, the Sideband-Use (SBU) signal pair is used forauxiliary or Alternate Modes of communication (DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, for example).The power management circuitry utilizes a 3.3 V inside the system and also uses VBUS to start up and negotiatepower for a dead-battery or no-battery condition.

  This document is the user’s guide for the TPS65983 Evaluation Module (TPS65983EVM). TheTPS65983EVM allows for evaluation of the TPS65983 IC as part of a stand-alone testing kit and for development and testing of USB Type-C and Power Delivery (PD) end products.

  The TPS65983EVM allows a simple way to evaluate the TPS65983. The TPS65983EVM is built with aUSB Type-C receptacle and TPS65983 to detect another TPS65983EVM or other Type-C host/device viaa USB Type-C cable. The TPS65983 detects the plug event and/or presence of another Type-C producton the CC1 or CC2 pin and provides or consumes power on the VBUS pin. The TPS65983EVM alsosupports dead battery mode and can be powered by another TPS65983EVM or other USB Type-C powerprovider. After CC detection and Type-C power is established, the TPS65983 will attempt to negotiate aUSB Power Delivery (PD) contract to provide or consume additional power. After a USB PD contract isnegotiated, the TPS65983 will attempt to enter an Alternate Mode. The TPS65983EVM can be used toemulate other USB Type-C and PD products, such as a dock, a notebook computer, a tablet, a dongle, anAC charger adapter, and a high-power bus-powered device. The GPIOs of the TPS65983 are routed tothe EVM J2 and J3 headers and can also be used to control external SuperSpeed and DisplayPortmultiplexers.
