RDR-641 - 40 W Variable Output (3 V to 8 V, 5 A; 8 V – 20 V Constant Power) Supply Using InnoSwitch3-Pro (INN3377C) and Microchip’s PIC16F18325 Microcontroller The InnoSwitch™3-Pro series family of ICs dramatically simplifies thedevelopment and manufacturing of fully programmable, highly efficientpower supplies, particularly those in compact enclosures. The universalI2C interface enables dynamic control of output voltage and currentalong with many configurable features. Telemetry provides reporting of programmed features and fault modes.

InnoSwitch3-Pro devices are ideal for AC/DC power supply applicationswhere fine (10 mV, 50 mA) output voltage and current adjustment arenecessary. Typical implementations comprise a system microprocessoror dedicated microcontroller with an I2C port that is used to configure,control and supervise operation of the power sub-system. The uVCC pinprovides a bias supply for the microprocessor in stand-alone implementationssuch as USB PD adapters and chargers.

This document is an engineering report describing a 3 V to 8 V, 5A, 8 V to 20 V constant power charger using the InnoSwitch3-Pro and Microchip’s PIC16F18325 Microcontroller. PIC16F18325 controls the InnoSwitch3-Pro through I2C by programming its COMMAND and telemetry registers. This design shows the high power density and efficiency that is possible due to the high level of integration of the InnoSwitch3-Pro controller providing exceptional performance. It contains the power supply specification, schematic, bill of materials, transformer documentation, printed circuit layout, and performance data.
